Is Your Board Assembled or Built?

A free diagnostic quiz for executive directors who want an honest read on the board they're working with. In about five minutes you'll have a result that names the pattern your board is in, and gives you something concrete to share with your board chair.

Understanding the Framework

Most Boards Weren't Built. They Were Assembled.

Most boards weren’t built deliberately. They were assembled over time, with seats filled as openings came up and members chosen because they were available and willing. That’s how most nonprofit boards form, and it produces predictable patterns: composition that doesn’t fit the organization, recruitment driven by who you know, and governance practices that exist on paper but not in practice.

The Assembled or Built?™ quiz names which of those patterns describes your board. Ten questions across four zones (orientation, composition, function, practice) produce a result that places your board in one of five archetypes.

Built Boards

Designed deliberately around what the mission needs. Members chosen for specific skills and networks the board doesn’t already have. Governance that matches how the board actually operates.

Assembled Boards

Put together over time as openings came up. Members chosen because they were available and willing to serve. Composition that drifts from what the mission requires now.

What the Quiz Looks At

ten questions across four zones of board dynamics

The quiz looks at four zones, each surfacing a different layer of how your board operates today.

01 – Orientation

Tenure and trajectory. How long you’ve been in the executive director role, and how the board’s current composition matches where the organization is now.

02 – Composition

Who’s on the board and how they got there. Whether recruitment has been deliberate or relationship-driven, and whether the board reflects the mission’s current needs.

03 – Function

How the board actually operates. Where strategic thinking starts, what board meetings look like, and the patterns you’ve been living with.

04 – Practice

Governance in practice. Term limits, bylaws, board self-evaluation, and succession planning. Whether they’re real or just on paper.

How will the quiz help improve my board's effectiveness?

The quiz won’t fix anything by itself. What it does is name the pattern your board is in. Naming it matters. A named pattern is something concrete you can take to your chair or your board, and discuss as a real thing rather than a vague concern. From there, you decide what comes next, whether that’s an engagement, a board conversation, or simply a clearer sense of what you’re working with.

Can I retake the quiz if needed?

Yes. The quiz is free, and there’s no limit. EDs sometimes retake it after major changes (a recruitment cycle, a chair transition, a strategic plan, or a capital campaign) to see if the result has shifted.
